What do Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have in common? They are all now critiquing trade deals ranging from NAFTA, signed 20 years ago to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, currently in Congress. To better understand why the TPP is such a significant issue, come listen to UC Hastings Law School Professor Joel Paul, who specializes in international trade.
Professor Paul will discuss (1) the promise and the reality of globalization, (2) how free trade has led to a regulatory race to the bottom, and (3) how we can harness globalization to raise environmental and labor standards at home and abroad.
He is a professor and former Associate Dean of Global Programs at the University of California Hastings Law School. He teaches international trade law and policy, international business transactions, and constitutional law. He previously taught on the law faculties of Yale, the University of Connecticut, Leiden (Netherlands), and American University. Professor Paul has published books and articles in the United States and abroad on trade policy, globalization, and foreign relations law. His books include FUNDAMENTALS OF U.S. FOREIGN TRADE POLICY (Westview Press) (with Stephen Cohen and Robert Blecker) and UNLIKELY ALLIES: How a Merchant, a Playwright and a Spy Saved the American Revolution, which was named one of the best books of 2009 by The Washington Post. His forthcoming book, Without Precedent: The Invention of John Marshall , will be published by Penguin Random House in 2017.
